What is the goal of this class?
--In this class we will recreate the Mutoscope with a device called a FlipOScope. The FlipOScope holds 24 photos, or roughly one second of movement. Each student will recieve one FlipOScope to make their own animation. (These kits are about $30)
What is a mutoscope?
--A Mutoscope was a cast iron device in the early 1900’s that was used to view short scenes of action, or movies if you will. Hundreds of photographs of action shot in sequence were secured onto a wheel within the machine, and when one turned the hand crank, the photos switched in rapid succession, like a flip book, creating the illusion of movement.
How will they make one?
--They will then shoot with digital cameras up to three seconds of footage, either in live action, or in stop motion paper cut out animation. The images from the digital cameras will then be printed as photographs on paper and applied to the FlipOScope device. When the student turns the FlipOScope hand crank, the images will switch in rapid succession, like a flip book. The students can then design their FlipOScope under our guidance, to make it unique.
