- **Event Name**: Watershed Wednesdays, Session 5: The “Deep Time” History of the Schoharie Watershed
- **Event Start and End Date**: Wed, 28 May, 2025 at 10:00 pm
- **Event Description**: The geology of the Schoharie Watershed, from Indian Head Mountain, along the Devils Path, to its junction with the Mohawk River, runs deep through time. The rocks record Earth and Life history from ~450 to ~380 million years ago, of shallow water seas, to lands with some of Earth’s oldest fossil forests and animal life. More recently, mile-thick glacial ice covered the watershed, which melted away ~15,000 years ago. First studies of the rocks, fossils and sediments began in the early 1800s, and continue today. Though covered extensively by soils and modern forests, much of the deep history of the Schoharie Watershed can be “read” across its mountains, valleys, hills, and flatlands.

Chuck Ver Straeten is a sedimentary rock geologist at the New York State Museum. He studies various rocks and fossils of the Devonian Period in New York State and beyond. He is both a geological detective and “deep time” historian of Earth and Life, between 420 and 380 million years ago. You’ll see him along road cuts, streams and mountain sides, studying the rocks. His main research examines the Devonian rocks of the Catskills, including Earths oldest fossil forests. In addition, he is also an improvising musician, inventing music and sound on the spot.
