Nearly forty years after the end of World War II, Kenzo Okuzaki, a former soldier in the Imperial Japanese Army, embarks on a relentless personal crusade to uncover the truth behind a series of mysterious executions carried out within his unit in the jungles of New Guinea. Traveling across Japan, Okuzaki tracks down former officers and fellow soldiers, confronting them directly about the fate of two comrades allegedly executed (and possibly cannibalized) during the desperate final months of the war. What begins as a search for answers soon becomes something far more volatile, as Okuzaki’s uncompromising interrogations escalate into moments of shocking confrontation that blur the boundaries between investigation, accusation, and spectacle.

What unfolds is less a conventional documentary than a volatile collision between subject and camera. A convicted murderer and what film critic Richard Brody memorably called a “truth terrorist,” Okuzaki confronts former officers with a fury that frequently erupts into attempted violence, forcing Hara’s film into ethically treacherous territory where investigation, provocation, and spectacle become inseparable. The result is a work that interrogates not only Japan’s suppressed wartime crimes but also the uneasy relationship between filmmaker, subject, and historical truth itself. By the time the film reaches its harrowing conclusion, THE EMPEROR’S NAKED ARMY MARCHES ON becomes something more than a documentary: a devastating confrontation with the psychic wreckage of war, and one of the most exhausting and revelatory viewing experiences in modern cinema.
