- **Event Description**: As we celebrate Hungry for History in Winchester and Frederick County, please join us to learn to safely preserve food at home with Amanda Johnson. 

This program will connect the rich history of food preservation with modern, research-based techniques for safe home use. Participants will learn about four major preservation methods — canning, freezing, drying, and fermentation — with a focus on:

-Historical milestones for each method and how they shaped our food traditions.
-Step-by-step basics for using each method safely at home.
-Food safety essentials, including why choosing the right method        matters and how to prevent botulism.
 -Skill-a-Thon activity midway through the program where participants identify preservation tools and equipment at stations around the room.
-Practical takeaways and Extension resource handouts to support ongoing safe preservation. 

Amanda Johnson, Food, Nutrition, and Health Extension Agent, proudly serves Frederick, Clarke, Shenandoah, Page, and Warren Counties. With 15 years of experience at West Virginia University Extension, Amanda is a seasoned educator who excels in hands-on learning and has worked extensively with volunteers to deliver impactful programs. Dedicated to serving the community, she is focused on understanding local needs through focus groups and data analysis to develop meaningful, priority programs. 

Hungry for History explores our area’s history, but also celebrates something that EVERYONE loves – food! Museums and historic sites in our community will offer a variety of programs and special events such as presentations, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, food tastings, special handouts and giveaways, historic recipes, agriculture related programs and more.
