Inspired by the Mesoamerican ritual floor Drum called Huehuetl, this workshop offers you the opportunity to create your own hand Drum Chimalli-Huehuetl.
The Chimalli-Huehuetl is a contemporary drum used in ritual dances. "Chimalli" in Nahuatl language is the shield used by ancient Jaguar and Eagle Warriors, and "Huehuetl" is the ritual drum, giving birth to the design of this type of Drum.
The creation and birth process takes 10 hours. Materials are provided: skin, wooden Frame, and rope. These vital energies that make up the drum are called "Tonalli" — the energy and heart of the Tree and the Animal, merged into one heart with you.
Participants should bring fundamental tools with them. Bringing your suitable tools will facilitate a better and smoother process.
- Sharp knife (any type of knife works, a Stanley knife is very functional). Ensure your knife is sharp.
- Hammer (size doesn't matter; comfort and functionality are key).
- Gloves (gardening gloves are ideal).
- Ratchet Secateurs (ensure they are of good quality).
- Scissors (regular kitchen scissors are ideal).
- Head Lamp (your phone's flashlight can work, but a Head Lamp is recommended for practicality).
- Yoga Mat or something to sit on at ground level for comfort.
- Food and drink for yourself or to share. As we'll be spending approximately 10 hours, bring what you need to keep your stomach happy and enhance your performance during your drum's birth. Food and refreshments available on site throughout the day.
The birth of a drum begins its gestation when your mind decides to answer the call of the drum with a single heart. Join this unique experience of creation and connection with ancestral rhythm!
