Looking for a memorable way to celebrate Jane Austen 250? Join us for a unique literary event in the heart of Winchester.
Spend an hour with our treasured Emma, who can tell you all about the disastrous proposal she received from Mr Elton, as well as her friend Elizabeth’s from Mr Collins, who simply showed up at their rectory one day.. a pompous man, who never read novels! She will tell you all about the other heroines in Jane Austen’s novels, some married, some not, though all in pursuit of true love in the 18th century.
Emma will also talk about her author, a bright young lady full of wit called Jane Austen, who lived the last months of her life in Winchester. Jane had often visited her nephews at Winchester College, and stayed with her friends, the Bigg sisters in the Close.
This talk is filled with readings from Jane’s novels, letters and her prayers.
We meet in the little church of St Lawrence, where Jane Austen’s Doctor Lyford worshipped and is buried, who nursed Jane in the last months of her life. This is a casual talk to promote Emma’s book Jane Austen’s Prayers - 250 Edition.
All are welcome!
Admission £5, £10 includes a copy of the book; pay cash on the door if you wish.
Jane Austen's Prayers 250 Edition has a special introduction by Emma Darlington and includes a guided tour of all the best Jane Austen sites to visit. Specially written for this 250 birthday edition, this gorgeous book is perfect for Austen fans everywhere.
Refunds are allowed 5 days before the start of the event.
