Haydn wrote his magnificent Nelson Mass with the sound of guns never far away in Europe at the very end of the 18th century. Jenkins’ popular and deeply moving The Armed Man, written to commemorate the millennium, is as an anti-war piece based on the traditional Mass alongside other religious and secular texts from a variety of cultures. It is dedicated to the victims of the war in Kosovo.
