Get your dancing shoes ready for a full day of swing dancing or pick and choose which parts of the day you want to join in on
All events will be held at the historic Hannah Block USO building in downtown Wilmington, NC on February 28th
The full day of dancing is $50
Just the workshop is $40 10AM-Noon
Just the social dance is $20 (Price includes a beginners Lindy Hop class from 6:30PM to 7:30PM) The live music starts at 7:30PM
Starting the day off we have Deena and Sam traveling to Wilmington to teach a beginners Balboa workshop. Balboa is a close embrace dance to faster jazz music, so make sure you are comfortable with having a close embrace during a dance and going at a quicker pace. You do not need a partner to attend the class, the class will be rotating so you will get chances to dance with several people.
Then we have a beginner Lindy Hop class right before the social starts, Lindy Hop is going to be the main dance style you see at our Swing Dance socials here and the hour long class will give you enough information to jump on the dance floor for the live music and enjoy it! No experience needed, no partner needed, come as you are!
Immediately after the beginner lesson the Onyx Club Boys start playing for a night of live music and dancing
ONYX CLUB BOYS is an acoustic string band rooted in Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy Jazz sounds of 1930's Paris, and Stuff Smith's New York City Swing. However, being from 21st Century North Carolina, their diverse influences take the music beyond borders. It's a trip around the world, which will make you swoon, tap your feet, and realize how universally similar music really is.
They perform as a quartet with violin/guitar/vocals, guitar, upright bass, and drums, as well as a trio and duo.
100% genuine! No backing tracks necessary! Curiously exotic, yet pleasantly familiar!
Make sure to wear clothing that is comfortable to move in if you want to join in with the dancing, as well as shoes that can slide a bit on the floor to keep your joints happy while you dance. You are welcome to attend the social just for the music and to watch the dancing as well.
Cape Fear Swing Dance Society has regular classes and socials, as well as a large Swing Dance weekend in May each year called Sea Jam. There are plenty of opportunities to use these dancing skills in the Wilmington area
