Formed by members of the Minneapolis-based polka band The Main Squeeze, Live it Up! is a heartfelt tribute to the music of polka legend Li’l Wally. What began as a few Wally tunes mixed into The Main Squeeze’s setlist quickly blossomed into a full-fledged side project focused solely on preserving and celebrating Wally’s distinctive sound. “It’s a labor of love,” says drummer and lead vocalist Larry Trojak. Embracing Wally’s minimalist push-style polka setup — trumpet, clarinet, concertina, bass, and drums — the band adds a subtle twist with piano-infused bass from a keyboard, while staying faithful to the original arrangements and spirit of the music.
More than just a nostalgia act, Live it Up! digs deep into Li’l Wally’s extensive songbook, pairing beloved standards like “Puka Jasiu” and “Take Me Baby” with lesser-known gems such as “In the Fields” and “Leaving Warsaw.” This balance of hits and “deep cuts” gives their performances a unique flavor that resonates with long-time fans and newcomers alike. Featuring Larry Trojak on drums and vocals, Todd Jurek on concertina and harmony vocals, Bernie Koslosky on trumpet, Dick “Roscoe” Powell on clarinet, alto sax, and trumpet, and Gene Retka on piano, Live it Up! brings a rich, authentic sound that celebrates the golden era of polka — with a fresh energy all their own.
