- **Event Name**: From Orange Peels to Atmospheric Aerosol: The Lifecycle of Volatile Organic Compounds
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 26 Feb, 2026 at 04:15 pm – Thu, 26 Feb, 2026 at 05:30 pm
- **Event Description**: Associate Professor of Chemistry Anthony Carrasquillo presents, “From Orange Peels to Atmospheric Aerosol: The Life cycle of Volatile Organic Compounds” as part of the Spring 2026 Faculty Lecture Series. Lectures will begin at 4:15 and take place in Bronfman Auditorium (Wachenheim B11). Students, faculty, staff, community members – all are welcome!

Every time you inhale you are sampling your local environment which contains a complex mixture of gas and particulate matter (aerosols). Among the most abundant gas phase species are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which play an important role in shaping atmospheric chemistry and global climate. In this seminar I will discuss the lifecycle of VOCs, from their initial emission to their transformation into secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Using limonene, the characteristic scent of oranges, as a model precursor that we encounter in our everyday lives, we explore the processes that initiate particle formation and the subsequent chemical reactions occurring within aerosol. We will examine how each class of reactions alters particle composition and atmospheric lifetime, drawing connections to human and ecosystem health and radiative forcing on the global climate system. Finally, we will address critical knowledge gaps and unanswered questions regarding aerosol aging in an evolving atmosphere.

Anthony Carrasquillo is originally from Revere, Massachusetts. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and Environmental Studies from Bowdoin College in 2007 and his PhD in Environmental Chemistry from MIT in 2015. He joined the Chemistry Department at Williams College in July 2017 and is an affiliate of the Programs in Environmental Studies and Public Health.

This talk is presented as part of the Spring 2026 Faculty Lecture Series. The series was founded in 1911 by Catherine Mariotti Pratt, the spouse of a faculty member who wanted to “relieve the tedium of long New England winters with an opportunity to hear Williams professors talk about issues that really mattered to them.” From these humble and lighthearted beginnings, the Faculty Lecture Series has grown to become an important forum for tenured professors to share their latest research with the larger intellectual community of the college.

The Faculty Lecture Series is organized by the faculty members of the Lecture Committee. The aim of the series is to present big ideas beyond disciplinary boundaries. All lectures begin at 4:15 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

Upcoming Faculty Lectures:
March 5 — Brian Michael Murphy: “The Data Complex”
March 12 — Mari Rodríguez Binnie: “Cold War Impressions: Puerto Rico in Myrna Báez’s 1970s Prints”
