- **Event Description**: Associate Professor of Art Mari Rodríguez Binnie presents, “Cold War Impressions: Puerto Rico in Myrna Báez’s 1970s Prints” as part of the Spring 2026 Faculty Lecture Series. Lectures will begin at 4:15 and take place in Bronfman Auditorium (Wachenheim B11). Students, faculty, staff, community members – all are welcome!

Puerto Rican painter and printmaker Myrna Báez (1931–2018) is best known for her atmospheric images of the island’s landscape, in which she captures vistas of the countryside and of Puerto Rico’s rapid urbanization. The 1970s were pivotal to Báez’s career. During this period, she fully developed her distinctive style, and first gained national and international renown. Critics have long credited her prints of the 1970s for informing the technical and compositional breakthroughs that would distinguish her paintings. This talk focuses on these prints to reassess their determining role within her practice, to reveal how they negotiated the geopolitical and cultural position of Puerto Rico in relation to Latin America and the United States during the Cold War.

Mari Rodríguez Binnie is an Associate Professor of Art History at Williams College and the Graduate Program in the History of Art at the Clark Institute, who specializes in modern and contemporary art in Latin America. Her recent book, “The São Paulo Neo-Avant-Garde: Radical Art and Mass Print Media in Cold War Brazil,” delves into conceptual experimentation with mass printing technologies in the city of São Paulo during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Her current book project examines the Puerto Rican artist Myrna Báez’s work of the 1970s in relation to geopolitical realignments between Latin America and the United States during the Cold War.

This talk is presented as part of the Spring 2026 Faculty Lecture Series. The series was founded in 1911 by Catherine Mariotti Pratt, the spouse of a faculty member who wanted to “relieve the tedium of long New England winters with an opportunity to hear Williams professors talk about issues that really mattered to them.” From these humble and lighthearted beginnings, the Faculty Lecture Series has grown to become an important forum for tenured professors to share their latest research with the larger intellectual community of the college.

The Faculty Lecture Series is organized by the faculty members of the Lecture Committee. The aim of the series is to present big ideas beyond disciplinary boundaries. All lectures begin at 4:15 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

Upcoming Faculty Lectures:
February 26 — Anthony Carrasquillo “From Orange Peels to Atmospheric Aerosol: The Lifecycle of Volatile Organic Compounds”
March 5 — Brian Michael Murphy “The Data Complex.”
