On Ash Wednesday, we begin our Lenten journey with a solemn call to repentance and renewal. Marked with ashes in the sign of the cross, we are reminded of our mortality—“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Yet, this is not a message of despair, but of grace and hope.

Lutherans observe Ash Wednesday as a time of self-examination, confession, and renewal. The ashes symbolize both the frailty of human life and the deep mercy of God, who calls us to return with humble hearts. In our readings, the prophet Joel urges us to return to the Lord with fasting and prayer, while Psalm 51 offers a plea for God’s cleansing and renewal. Paul reminds us that now is the time of God’s salvation, and in the Gospel, Jesus teaches us about the true heart of repentance—a life of faith, not outward show.

This service will include:

The Imposition of Ashes – a visible sign of repentance and renewal
Holy Communion – Christ’s presence to sustain us in our Lenten journey
A time of reflection and prayer as we turn toward the cross
