Meet at Pavilion 2 parking lot below the Terry Wentz education center.
Join Juniata Valley Audubon Society President Michael Kensinger at Canoe Creek State Park on March 29 as we search for migrating waterfowl during peak spring movement. As wetlands and open water draw in traveling birds, Canoe Creek becomes a vital rest stop for ducks, geese, and other aquatic species making their way north.
Late March can bring an exciting mix of dabbling ducks, diving ducks, lingering winter species, and early migrants. Depending on conditions, we may encounter Northern Pintails, Green-winged Teal, Ring-necked Ducks, Buffleheads, and perhaps even a surprise or two. Canoe Creek’s marsh habitat also offers excellent opportunities to spot Pied-billed Grebes, early swallows, Red-winged Blackbirds, and overhead raptors.
In addition to waterfowl, we will tally all birds observed during the outing, contributing to our official field trip species list. This is a wonderful opportunity to build identification skills, compare similar species side-by-side, and enjoy time outdoors with fellow birders.
Whether you are new to birding or a seasoned observer, this trip offers something for everyone.
What to Bring:
• Dress for variable early-spring weather (layers and waterproof footwear recommended)
• Binoculars
• Field guide (print or digital)
• Snacks and water if desired
JVAS will provide a spotting scope for close views of birds across the marsh and open water.
Spring migration is unfolding — come see what’s moving through Canoe Creek!
