- **Event Description**: Join us to honor and remember freed and enslaved ancestors during the annual Slavery Remembrance Month of August.About this EventEnslaved Ancestors Remembrance ProgramJoin Homecoming Development Corporation (HDC) for an in-person gathering to honor and remember our formerly enslaved ancestors and recognize those who had antebellum and Federal Writers slave narratives published in the 1700’s, 1800’s and 1930's. You will learn about their stories and where to read them online.HDC President and Founder, Eric Sheppard, will also share information about his Camden, North Carolina ancestor, , whose 1843 narrative describes the lives of enslaved ancestors who worked on the Great Dismal Swamp Canal. Moses earned money telling his story in Europe, and he eventually purchased the freedom of several other family members. Eric will also share information about another ancestor, Charles Grandy, whose 1937 slave narrative was documented in the 2003 HBO special "Unchained Memories." Charles Grandy was living in Norfolk, VA, when he passed away.This program offers a space to reflect, share stories, and connect with hidden history in a meaningful way.
