There are different terms such as Latinos, Hispanics, Latinx, Latine, Chicano, and others, all equally valuable. We advocate for self-identification for every person. For purposes of this conference and additional uses, we are using the terms Latino and Hispanic.Agenda?: 07:30 AM - 09:30 AMRegistration and Breakfast?: 08:30 AM - 09:30 AMMorning Plenary: Advancing Seamless Coverage and Care AccessHost: Catherine BirdInfo: Join Catherine Bird and Rachel Pryor for a discussion moderated by Tiffany Tavarez exploring how health plans and community organizations can work together to reduce barriers to coverage, strengthen member retention, and ensure continuity of care during periods of policy and life transition. This session will highlight innovative engagement strategies, navigation models, and community-based approaches that help individuals maintain access to critical health services and support.?: 09:40 AM - 10:40 AMHow Prescription Drug Prices Harm Latino Communities & How They Can RespondHost: Merith BaseyInfo: When the price of medicine forces a person to ration doses or a prescription goes unfilled because rent is due, drug prices no longer represent an abstract policy issue, and families edge further towards an affordability crisis facing 1 in 3 Americans. For Latino communities already navigating chronic conditions at disproportionate rates, high drug prices are a compounding burden that too often goes unnamed. In this session, Merith Basey of Patients For Affordable Drugs and Evelyn Pérez-Verdía of We Are Más will share new findings from a partnership with Brown University exploring how high prescription drug prices are harming Latino communities, from delayed care to difficult financial tradeoffs, and how investing in and collaborating with communities can build an “early warning system” to identify relevant information gaps and disinformation related to drug pricing and healthcare reforms. ?: 09:40 AM - 10:40 AMFrom Fear to Care: Culturally Rooted Doula Support for Latinx CommunitiesHost: Alexia DoumbouyaInfo: An Interactive, solution-centered discussion on how immigration fear and policy uncertainty are driving a silent perinatal and family health crisis and why Spanish-speaking, culturally rooted doulas are a frontline response. Participants will explore CocoLife's community training model as a replicable framework for building care capacity from within.?: 09:40 AM - 10:40 AMBuilding Health Where People LiveHost: Samantha Shaak, PhDInfo: Led by Samantha Shaak, this session will explore how the Vital Conditions framework can be used to advance place-based health improvement strategies at the neighborhood level. Participants will examine how cross-sector partnerships, community engagement, and upstream investments can strengthen the conditions people need to thrive and create more equitable health outcomes where people live, work, and play.?: 10:50 AM - 11:50 AMNourishing Resilience: Food, Trauma, & Healing in Latino Immigrant CommunitiesHost: Sarah RamirezInfo: Latino immigrants often carry the invisible weight of displacement, family separation, and cultural disruption, experiences that extend far beyond psychological distress to shape long-term physical health. Emerging evidence demonstrates that trauma is biologically embedded, contributing to chronic inflammation, dysregulated immune responses, and increased risk of autoimmune disease. Simultaneously, the fracture of cultural identity, particularly through loss of traditional foods, communal eating practices, and intergenerational knowledge, further compounds vulnerability.
This highly interactive 45-minute workshop reframes food not simply as nutrition, but as a culturally grounded, trauma-informed intervention. Participants will explore the bidirectional relationship between trauma and physiology, including the impact of chronic stress on inflammatory pathways and immune function. ?: 10:50 AM - 11:50 AMNadie me quita lo bailado: an empowering conversation on mental wellness Host: Geraldine PenaInfo: In this session, Geraldine Pena will be exploring the struggles in mental health that Latinx folks experience at a higher rate due to our systemic issues. From there, Pena will connect that data to health concerns, ending by outlining clear ways to address these statistics.?: 10:50 AM - 11:50 AMRebuilding Trust in Public HealthHost: Ana Martinez DonateInfo: Latinos in the U.S. experience significant disparities in access to overall health and mental health services due to lack of health insurance, cost of services, limited awareness of mental health resources, mental health stigma, and fear of deportation. Limited English proficiency coupled with an acute lack of bilingual and culturally competent providers further impede Latinos’ adequate access to quality mental health services. The COVID-19 pandemic, volatile immigration policies and practices, have amplified the need for mental health care and exacerbated mental health disparities for Latino communities, making it urgent to identify low-cost, effective strategies to reduce these gaps.
CRISOL-Mente is a 5-year multi-level, lay-health worker (LHW)-aided, community intervention to reduce mental health disparities among Latinos in the Philadelphia area. ?: 12:00 PM - 01:00 PMLunch?: 12:15 PM - 01:00 PMAfternoon Plenary: Latino Health in Unpredictable TimesHost: Dr. Valerie ArkooshInfo: Join Pennsylvania's Secretaries of Health and Human Services for a fireside chat exploring how state agencies are addressing the evolving health and human service needs of Latino communities. This conversation will highlight cross-agency collaboration, strategies to improve access to care and essential services, partnerships with community organizations, and efforts to advance health equity across the Commonwealth. Attendees will gain valuable insights into current initiatives, emerging challenges, and opportunities to strengthen the health and well-being of Latino Pennsylvanians.?: 01:30 PM - 02:30 PMCelebrity Keynote: Raúl GonzálezHost: Raúl González?: 02:30 PM - 03:30 PMHelp for the Helpers: Crash Out, BUT Don't Burnout!Host: Jennifer BrunoInfo: Healers need Healing Too: When breakdowns lead to breakthroughs!
