Gary Hamel - Show runs from July 11-August 25th, 2025
“These pieces are all based on Victorian-era photographs from the late 1800s and early 1900s that I have found in thrift shops, flea markets, and yard sales. I feel that they are really abandoned people because their family did not take the time to write who they were on the back of the photo. Several generations later, they are still unknown and so are set adrift at yard sales.
“I’ve been buying these photos for several decades and now have quite a collection. By combining them with other photographs and materials in my art, I’ve been creating new scenes, new scenarios, and telling new stories.”
Gary Hamel is a working artist who lives in Orange, New Hampshire. He has had a number of pieces exhibited in museums throughout New England and Mexico and is listed in Who's Who of American Art. He has made his living from art for 30 years.
Eleven years ago, he contracted shingles, which affected his eyesight. He was unable to paint for 11 years, and when he resumed five years ago he flung himself into the grand experiment of relying mostly on discarded objects to create art and test his limits.
His work has been exhibited at Saint Gaudens, The Enfield Shaker Museum, and in numerous galleries throughout Maine including the Turtle Gallery, The Nan Mulford Gallery, and The Islesford Gallery. His art hangs in countless private homes and galleries throughout the country.
