Das zweite Album von Dead Pioneers, das letzten April erschienen ist, legt dies nahe: „PO$T AMERICAN“ ist das Ende des Anfangs und der Anfang vom Ende: “Currently, we are amidst the gross existence of capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy and the many oppressive forces that have come to inform everything around us,” erläutert Sänger und Songschreiber Gregg Deal. “The title PO$T AMERICAN informs a collective disenfranchisement and disillusionment to the so-called American dream, while moving forward with hope of a desired designation of unity outside those that would use us for their own capitalistic power grab.”
Aber noch mal von vorne: Die Dead Pioneers entstanden als logische musikalische Erweiterung der Performancekunst ihres Sängers: Identität, Widerstand, die Komplexität der Erfahrungen indigener Völker und die Brechung herrschender Narrative sind ihre Themen, die sie auf einem Bett aus einminütigen Hardcorepunk-Explosionen und Spoken Word-Intermezzi servieren, die immer auch Erkundungen des Status Quo und Kritik an (nicht nur) der US-Gesellschaft sind.
So wie seine Performancekunst sich mit dem Erbe der Kolonialisierung und systemischen Marginalisierung auseinandersetzt, eröffnen Dead Pioneers – neben Gregg Deal sind das Josh Rivera und Abe Brennan an den Gitarren, Bassist Lee Tesche (Algiers) und Schlagzeuger Shane Zweygardt – einen viszeralen Dialog über Überleben, Widerstandsfähigkeit und die Rückeroberung der Stimme.
