The City of Wichita, Kansas Department of Transportation, Wichita Police Department, Parks and Recreation, city housing officials, and private contractors. All these agencies, resources, and public dollars are coming together to clear a community of Wichitans who still have nowhere permanent to go.

This is David versus Goliath
A true test of the power of the people. 

On October 12, approximately 20–25 Chapin Park residents face losing the place many have called home for years. The city government has the resources to spend $ 1-1.5 million a year to criminalize and destroy their only housing option, but apparently not enough to ensure everyone has somewhere safe to live.

Chapin has more animals than people. Almost every resident has dogs; many have multiple, and two also have cats. These are beautiful, loving, well-cared-for animals, most chipped, licensed, and fixed. When we asked residents what they needed, they immediately started listing supplies for their dogs. We actually had to ask, "No, what do YOU need?"

The remaining residents face housing barriers our current resources can't resolve. Some have vouchers but cannot find landlords willing to accept them. Others cannot find housing that accommodates their animals, while some face losing their partners because of criminal background restrictions. They are being asked to make impossible choices to receive assistance, or no suitable options are available.

These people are not refusing help. A voucher isn't a home, a shelter bed isn't permanent housing, and moving people out of sight doesn't give them somewhere to live. We are not fighting to keep people living in tents. We are fighting to make sure they have somewhere better to go.

We need Wichita to show up Saturday. Bring your signs, your voices, and your willingness to stand alongside people who deserve the same dignity and opportunities as everyone else. We cannot let someone's bank account or housing status determine whether their community deserves to be heard.

We also need volunteers physically present in the encampment for various reasons and for varying lengths of time, beginning October 10 and continuing throughout the cleanup until we relocate all residents. If interested, complete our Get Involved form at:
