We are thrilled to welcome Rachel Long, Founder and Grief Counselor from the Joshua Center, as she joins us for this meaningful opportunity to gain insight into the emotions experienced by the foster youth in our care. Rachel brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in grief counseling, particularly in the context of foster care, making her an invaluable resource for our community.
The training will cover four key topics:
1. Goodbye to What Was: Separation and Anticipatory Grief
This section will explore the emotional impact of separation from biological families and the anticipatory grief that children may experience before a transition occurs. Participants will learn strategies to support youth as they navigate these complex feelings.
2. The Grief That Waits: Delayed Grief
Attendees will gain insight into delayed grief, which may not manifest immediately but can surface later in life. This segment will provide tools to recognize signs of delayed grief and ways to address it effectively.
3. The Grief They’re Told to Hide: Disenfranchised Grief
This topic addresses disenfranchised grief, which occurs when individuals feel that their grief is not acknowledged or validated by society. Participants will learn how to create an environment where youth feel safe expressing their grief and how to validate their feelings.
4. The Grief of Identity: Who Am I Now?
In this final section, we will discuss the identity struggles that foster youth face as they cope with loss and change. Understanding this aspect of grief is crucial for helping children form a positive sense of self.
This training also provides informational handouts and interactive activities for parents, designed to foster engagement and deeper understanding. We encourage you to join us to better understand the underlying reasons behind our children's actions and to learn how to support them through their grief. Together, we can create a nurturing environment that acknowledges and addresses the complex emotions of foster youth.
