- **Event Name**: Hoes, Pits, and Pipestone: Cultural Complexity of Late Precontact Period of SW Manitoba
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 14 Feb, 2026 at 01:00 pm
- **Event Description**: We are pleased to announce that our third Long Ago Yukon talk in our 2025-2026 speaker series. It will be presented by Dr. Mary Malainey of Brandon University.

Her talk focusses on the southwest corner of Manitoba, where a concentration of earthworks has attracted the attention of archaeologists for more than 120 years. It was not possible to confirm the presence of Indigenous farming in the area until Eric Olson found bison scapula hoes along Gainsborough Creek in 2018, however. Research conducted since then has enhanced our understanding of both the Besant/Sonota people who initiated the construction of earthworks and the Indigenous agriculturalists who occupied the same area about 1000 years later. The importance of the region was likely enhanced by the ease of accessing raw materials for flaked and ground stone tools along Pipestone Creek.

Dr. Mary Malainey, is a Professor of Anthropology at Brandon University and Treasurer of the Manitoba Archaeological Society. Her research interests include precontact Indigenous farming in Manitoba, hunter-gatherers, settlement and subsistence, Late Precontact pottery, and lipid residue analysis. Dr. Malainey was awarded a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Archaeological Residue and Functional Analyses in 2004. Her 2011 book “A Consumer’s Guide to Archaeological Science: Analytical Techniques,” helps archaeologists better understand the scientific techniques available for the analysis of their materials.
