Dear neighbors and Documentary Club members,
This month’s Documentary Club meetup is all about food security and our local Upper Valley Haven!
Have you been curious what sorts of donations might be most helpful to local food security, or perhaps what volunteer roles exist around the community that you could help out with? Whether sorting and organizing donations in the food shelf, cooking donations into nutritious prepared meals, tending to gardens on the grounds and in the community, supporting the shelter… or serving another important role on the team, Ella from the Haven will be there to help you learn the myriad ways you can put your skills into action in service of hungry neighbors. We’ll be meeting next Thursday, November 13th, once again in the Upper Valley Food Coop Classroom up on the store’s second floor.
To help guide our learning and discussion, we’ll have some additional voices in attendance with connections and insight into other angles on this topic: Rachel Kent with the Upper Valley Apple Corps nonprofit will be in attendance to help folks learn about food forest projects around the community where folks are researching, planting and caring for fruit trees for neighbors to eat from. We’ll also be joined by Vermont filmmaker Corey Hendrickson, who created the short documentary Ramen Day that we’ll be watching together to start the evening. Ramen Day is all about the Vermont Everyone Eats program that helped to feed neighbors throughout the Covid pandemic, and features interviews from some local residents and neighborhood organizations deeply involved with helping to keep folks fed throughout the neighborhood.
Everyone is invited, so we hope you’ll consider joining us in the classroom above the Upper Valley Food Coop next Thursday starting at 7pm. It’ll be a great chance to connect with some neighbors and learn about some ways to get involved in supporting the Upper Valley Haven (and local food security more broadly). If you're a fan of documentaries (or know someone that might be), here is a chance to meet an acclaimed Vermont documentary filmmaker and learn how films he designs and crafts his films to have real world impacts.
In the Downtown Doc Club we'd generally love to hear about your favorite films, and we always have a lot of good recommendations to share. Hope to see you next Thursday, and send a note to
