- **Event Name**: Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory - Free Screening and Discussion with Downtown Doc Club
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 19 Feb, 2026 at 07:00 pm – Thu, 19 Feb, 2026 at 09:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Dear neighbors and Downtown Documentary Club members,

Doc Club frequently watches films related to getting out in the wilderness and connecting with nature. We’ve explored gardening within the local Farm Force and Gleaning volunteer programs, birding for the Christmas Bird Count, the survival-inspired games and competitions of the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics (WEIO), why salamanders cross the road, Great Philippine Eagle conservation, the list goes on. While these films all pave separate paths into the great outdoors, they all lead to the same diverse physical and mental health benefits that Mother Nature has to offer. This month, instead of discussing the activities or hobbies that bolster wellbeing, we’ll be doing something akin to popping open the hood to take a look at the engine whose performance we so often critique (and try to tweak).

For our first session on the underpinnings of mental health, we’ll be watching “Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory” (2014) - about the complex relationship of music with cognition, and its potential value in supporting individuals living with Alzheimer’s Disease and different forms of dementia. As always, our Documentary Club will discuss the film following our viewing, with a knowledgeable guide to connect the topic to our lives here in the Upper Valley. Our discussion leader this time has previously served as an Alzheimer’s Association Ambassador to Vermont’s Congressional delegation, and is a valuable connection for anyone that might know an individual experiencing Alzheimer’s Disease (the most common cause of dementia). We hope you’ll join us to connect with curious and caring peers, and to discover new resources to help support our neighbors living with the group of symptoms known as dementia.

The Upper Valley Food Coop’s Downtown Documentary Club offers a free in-person viewing opportunity for each month’s high quality documentary selection in our classroom space on the second floor of our big red building downtown. The films chosen for this program are also available for you to stream through the free Kanopy service available through your local library. In addition to viewing the film, each Doc Club meetup includes a voluntary group discussion, usually guided by a local professional or expert able to connect the film’s subject matter to local volunteer projects and nonprofit work. Please send a note to Education@UpperValleyFood.Coop to join the Downtown Doc Club email list.

Best wishes,
The Downtown Doc Club team
