Jane Sanders, a textile artist based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, presents her captivating exhibition, "Visible Threads." Known for her unique approach to textile art, Jane stitches intricate portraits of iconic musicians from all genres using her vintage 1960's Singer sewing machine. Her work stands out for its unconventional materials and quirky mixed media, bringing famous faces to life in a new light.
Jane employs techniques such as applique, beading, and embroidery, pushing the boundaries of stitched work. Inspired by pop culture and the audience’s love of their musical heroes, each portrait tells a story, capturing the essence and personality of the musicians she portrays. From the vibrant colours to the intricate details, Jane’s work offers a fresh perspective on familiar icons.
Jane began her art training at The Salisbury College of Art and Design and completed it with a degree in Contemporary Arts Practice from Northumbria University. Since then, she has practised art across many disciplines. Her work has been included in numerous group shows, and she has had three solo shows in the North East.
Jane’s portraits have been commissioned and purchased internationally and have been featured widely in the media, including Mojo Music magazine, Be Creative magazine, Grayson Perry’s Art Club, Channel 4, BBC Look North, The Daily Express, and Talk Radio, to name but a few. She has a portrait in the permanent collection of The Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, and in 2022, she was shortlisted for the Fine Art Textiles Award (FATA).
Additionally, Jane was commissioned by Tim Burgess’ Listening Party and chosen by Trojan Records to represent Lee Scratch Perry for Spotify.
