About the Workshop
10am – 3pm, with a break for lunch
 
What you’ll do
 
1. Learn a selection of traditional corn dolly weaves to get a feel for working with straw.
2. Create your own designs or take inspiration from Sally’s reference books, choosing from shapes such as swooping swallows, horseshoes, lanterns or hearts.
3. Hear about the history and folklore of corn dollies as you weave.
4. Take home your finished pieces, complete with decorative ribbons and charms.
 
Your tutor
Sally Murdoch is an experienced corn dolly maker who teaches at historic sites and events across the region. Known for her calm and patient teaching style, she brings deep knowledge of the craft’s traditions and a passion for its soothing, rhythmic nature.
 
The setting
The workshop takes place within the unique surroundings of Whitchurch Silk Mill, itself home to endangered heritage skills including silk weaving and silk ribbon weaving. Your ticket includes admission to the Mill.
 
What to bring
Comfortable, sensible clothing and suitable footwear.
Lunch is not included, but lunches and hot and cold drinks are available from our Riverside Café.
 
Who is it for?
This workshop is designed for adults but is suitable for ages 16+.
Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
