As part of the Goathland Nature Group Talks, Gary Savill will discuss the benefits of dark nights for the many animals that live in and around Goathland. The talk will be held at The Hut in Goathland.
We are so fortunate to live within an International Dark Sky Reserve, with large natural areas all around us, which means local wildlife should thrive during the night. We will explore what goes on outside when we are normally asleep. Nature has evolved to use the dark and has been shown to do less well in artificially lit environments.
What can you do to help our local wildlife? Come along to see what simple measures can be taken to improve the night environment and also learn some of the wonders of “Nature in the Dark”
As an added bonus Richard Darn, an expert astronomer from NYMNP, will host an astronomy event afterwards. If weather permits, we can get outside and using telescopes should enjoy great views of the Milky Way, some planets and even the Geminids.
So, if you just want to learn about what our local wildlife does overnight, or you wish to get a great opportunity to view our night sky, come along. It promises to be a great multimedia event.
