Intro to 3D Scanning with Lamar!

This class introduces students to the fundamentals of 3D scanning using a smartphone and the Polycam app. Participants will learn how to capture real-world objects and environments and convert them into accurate 3D models using their phone’s camera or LiDAR (if available). The course covers best practices for scanning, including lighting, movement, and framing, as well as an overview of different scan modes in Polycam and how to choose the right one for various projects.

By the end of the class, students will be able to create, refine, and export 3D scans for use in design, art, gaming, fabrication, or virtual environments. No prior 3D modeling experience is required—just a smartphone and curiosity. This hands-on class emphasizes experimentation, problem-solving, and creative applications of 3D scanning technology.

Hiya folks! I’m Lamar, a visual creator and maker with a strong passion for 3D printing/scanning, microcontroller work, drone photography, and spatial computing. What started as a curiosity quickly grew into a hands-on way to bring ideas to life—whether it’s prototyping tools, customizing functional parts, or experimenting with artistic designs/props. I previously worked in Chicago as a 3D printer technician that built, repaired, and printed on various 3D printers (Ultimaker, Lulzbot, Z-morph, Prusa, Formlabs models).

I currently work as a Video Producer/Editor, but have continued my passion for project-based learning in my personal life. I enjoy exploring the intersection of creativity and technology, learning new techniques, and sharing the possibilities of 3D printing with others. For me, it’s not just about scanning/printing objects, but about problem-solving, innovation, and transforming imagination into something tangible.
