Live Jazz with John Leigh Calder - Brain Injury Awareness
This gig marks the end of Brain Injury Awareness Week and John Leigh Calder has jumped on board with this kaupapa! There will be information available on the night and a short talk about Brain Injury. This is not a fundraising event, but if you want to make a donation, they will accept cash or give you information on how you can support the cause.
A Brain injury is often called the silent epidemic and referred to as the hidden injury as there are often no visible injuries. Every 15 minutes a person living in New Zealand will suffer a brain jury. That’s 99 people every day!
The Brain Injury Association Northland provides a safe barrier-free access to support for individuals who have been injured. We also support their friends and family to understand the effects of a brain injury.
We would love to see you at this event! Come along to support John and the Brain Injury Association Northland and find out more about Brain Injuries.
Musician John Leigh Calder has returned to Whangarei after leaving 45 years ago to forge a career in the hard-to-crack London industry. He's back for summer and playing at Butters once a month!
Since the mid-1970s, the composer, vocalist and double-bass player has worked in London and Sydney as a backing and session musician, recorded four albums of his own jazzy bluesy funky music, been a songwriter and movie score writer.
Before his international journey, John Calder was in the famous-in-Whangarei and known-elsewhere band The Clan and played with several other groups in Northland and beyond.
''After hustling around London for a few years as a musician,'' his break into what he describes as ''slightly famous'' came when his band's single 'American Echoes' hit the Record of the Week spot.
