Guided Wetumpka Crater Hike

Step into one of Wetumpka’s most fascinating landscapes on this guided hike along the southern collapsed rim of the Wetumpka Impact Crater.

This entry-level experience offers a rare opportunity to explore private property while learning about the geology and story behind one of Alabama’s most remarkable natural features. The hike is led by an expert trail guide and supported by Auburn Geosciences graduate students serving as scientific interpreters.

Check-in and shuttle departure will take place at the Wetumpka Civic Center, 410 S. Main Street. Shuttles begin loading at 8:00 AM, with the final shuttle departing at 8:45 AM. The hike begins promptly at 9:00 AM.

The route is a 1.10-mile loop with approximately 49 feet of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 90 minutes. Participants will travel mostly flat wooded terrain with several moderate inclines and declines, uneven natural ground, and a small supported creek crossing. Portions of the hike follow streams within a shaded forest environment.

This area includes property used during the 2009 drilling expedition led by Dr. David King and represents a rare window into the largely privately owned impact structure.

Participants must be age 16 or older. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Closed-toe hiking shoes are required, and all participants must remain with the guided group and complete a liability waiver. The event will be held rain or shine unless conditions are deemed unsafe.
