“Gee, I always wanted to learn sign language” is a line I have heard so often when others see me signing. Here is your chance for some grassroots understanding and a possible start.
Too often, a sense of inadequacy surfaces when attempting to communicate with a deaf individual. This workshop will offer helpful guidelines aimed at removing some of that discomfort as well as basic strategies to facilitate a more meaningful rapport. The following will be covered: the world through hearing challenged eyes, speaking vs. signing, ASL (American Sign Language) alphabet, key everyday signs and lastly some situational dialogue examples.
Leo Pujdak, is a CODA (child of deaf adult). Raised in a household where both parents were deaf not only made sign language the primary language used at home, but also proved invaluable into grasping some of the challenges and isolation faced by deaf individuals.
