René Provost Ad. E., FRSC, a Temple member, McGill professor, and internationally renowned legal authority, will lead this discussion examining a complex and often overlooked chapter of Holocaust history.

During the Holocaust, in many ghettos established by the Nazis, the Jewish community organized its own institutions, including courts. These courts operated in all areas of the law including, most contentiously, criminal law. A range of antisocial behaviours occurred in ghettos, from failing to return borrowed books to murder, and these were sanctioned by Jewish courts with penalties going from ordering the payment of a kilo of potatoes as a fine to public hangings. These courts were later continued, in occupied Germany at the end of the war, in camps for Jewish Displaced Persons. Were such courts the embodiment of justice as a social necessity in any context, or the violent imposition of order masquerading as law?
