- **Event Name**: Jennalyn Speer-In/Habit-Living with Birds
- **Event Start and End Date**: Fri, 17 Jul, 2026 at 05:00 pm
- **Event Description**: In/habit tells the stories of birds, revealing how their lives intersect with and offer meaning to our own. Through painting and collage, I explore migration, interdependence, and biodiversity, reflecting on belonging, loss, and how human habits shape—and disrupt—the world we share.

The aim of my art is to educate and raise awareness about bird conservation with the goal of promoting our biological, cultural, emotional, and spiritual attachment to the natural world.

Through my work I visually interpret scientific data about birds. I aesthetically communicate their complexity, ecological interdependencies, and the threats they face that lead to their loss . Since 1970, there has been a net loss of over 2.9 billion birds from North America. This amounts to the disappearance of close to 1 out of every 3 birds from the United States and Canada in the last 50 years. Over 300 bird species in North America alone have populations currently in decline and birds are facing dire, yet often reversible, human caused threats of habitat loss, global warming, and pollution among others. I consider painting a form of activism as well as a personal and social commentary in response to the tragedy of this loss.

I use a mixed-media collage process to create most of my art. I find that cutting, piecing, and rearranging collage elements embodies my core conceptual themes. By drawing birds onto maps of their home ranges and physically extracting, shifting, or repositioning them I embody the physical reality of destroyed, shifted, or altered habitats. Adding or or removing layers of paint and paper acknowledges belonging, loss, and the complexity of environmental interconnectedness.
