- **Event Description**: A Darkly Comic Solo Show Where Even Death Can’t Afford to DieAbout this EventThe Humanist Project presentsNobody Cares: America’s Favorite Healthcare SystemA Darkly Comedic Solo PerformancePerformed by Artistic Director, Michael F. ToomeyIn Nobody Cares, audiences are transported to a world where even Death can’t afford to die. After a near-fatal horse accident, Death finds themselves trapped in the endless, surreal maze of the American healthcare system— facing insurance forms, hold music, and bureaucratic indifference. What follows is a biting yet playful exploration of mortality, capitalism, and the strange ways we navigate systems meant to care for us. Blending satire, physical comedy, clown, and theatrical storytelling, Nobody Cares invites audiences to laugh at the absurdities of modern life while reflecting on the deeply human questions beneath them. The piece was devised with the creative collaboration of Mia Alexandra, Jon-Mykul Bowen, and Fernando Zermeno Garavito, with production stage management by Meg Meschino. In just the past two years, The Humanist Project has produced two original shows, appeared in the New York Fringe Festival, completed an out-of-state residency, and expanded workshops for performers and non-performers alike. With its upcoming Professional Idiot Season, the company takes an exciting leap toward sustained annual programming rooted in laughter, curiosity, and compassion. The Humanist Project is a Brooklyn-based theater company dedicated to recentering play at the core of performance. We believe that play is not only the foundation of great acting but also a vital force in artistic creation and human connection. Our work invites artists to bring their full selves to their work, their play, and their lives. We strive to reclaim play as a serious practice in professional performance, create new works using play as the primary method of discovery, explore the universal qualities of play across cultures and artistic traditions, foster a training environment where actors engage with curiosity, pleasure, and unique presence, and emphasize play as deeply personal, goal-free, and essential to meaningful storytelling. At The Humanist Project, we play, create, and explore—because play is the essence of performance and life. Michael F. Toomey is a neurodivergent director, performer, and educator whose work reimagines actor training through the lens of play, movement, and a deep commitment to neurodivergent access. He is the Artistic Director of The Humanist Project, a Brooklyn-based company creating bold, physically driven theater that fuses irreverent comedy with deep human inquiry. For nearly 30 years, Michael has acted, directed, and taught Shakespeare, working closely with Tina Packer and Kevin Coleman at the internationally renowned Shakespeare & Company, where he helped shape generations of actors through text, movement, and play. Holding an MFA in Lecoq-based theater, Toomey has taught and directed internationally, specializing in clown, buffoon, devising, and physical performance. His work blends rigorous craft with radical joy—offering actors tools to unlock presence, vulnerability, and complicity with their audiences. Trained by master teachers Philippe Gaulier and Giovanni Fusetti, Michael’s artistic lineage bridges classic and contemporary approaches. As a deviser and ensemble leader, he’s brought original work from intimate workshop spaces to major stages and international festivals. Whether developing original works like MAD MAD MAD and A Crucible, consulting with institutions, or leading transformative workshops, Michael’s goal is to recenter play in performance. —TICKETSCommunity Tickets (Limited Amount): $15General Admission: $25Pay-It-Forward (Helps Subsidize Community Tickets): $35—Seating/Bar: 30 minutes before showtime. This event is indoors.—Venue Accessibility: We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible event environment for all attendees. Work that counteracts the passive, the isolating, the distance between people. Come experience joyful creation, partake in brave exploration, meet the person sitting next to you, share about what you’re seeing, buy them a drink. Our goal is to present relevant performing and visual art that is accessible for diverse audiences; art that connects and inspires us, and incites us to leap across cultural boundaries. The Foundry is a holding tank for raw, funny, challenging, empowering work that changes the lens through which we view each other."
