Step back in time with the Berks History Center on this unique, day-long bus tour through Berks County’s Amish past. Led by BHC Trustee Elam Stoltzfus, Executive Director of the Nicholas Stoltzfus Homestead, this immersive journey explores the earliest Amish settlements in Berks County, beginning with the arrival of Jacob Burkey in 1733.
Travel the scenic countryside as we trace the history of Northkill, the first Amish settlement in North America, established in Upper Bern Township in 1737. Along the way, we’ll delve into the remarkable story of the Amish migration from Europe to Pennsylvania, their quest for religious freedom, and their commitment to nonresistance in the face of violence.
Highlights include discussion of two key events that shaped the early Amish experience in colonial America:
• The Hochstetler Massacre (1757) – a harrowing attack during the French and Indian War that has become a defining symbol of Amish faith and nonviolence.
• Degler’s Chest Incident (1752) – another violent episode on the western frontier of Berks County, underscoring the challenges early settlers faced.
This guided tour will provide deep insight into the early Amish way of life, their resilience, and the lasting impact of their peaceful doctrine on American history.
