As part of this summer's Unearth a Story theme, we invite you to explore and share your own family story through this craft workshop that blends family cartography and pictorial mapmaking. Using felt application, participants will create a quilt square that maps the people, neighborhoods, and migration pathways that have shaped their lives. 

Pictorial mapmaking occupies a space between art and science, relying on codes, symbols, and visual storytelling. The connection between cartography and quilting is especially potent, as both practices share this symbolic language. To ground their work, participants will learn about and reference the work of artists like Louise E. Jefferson and Valerie Goodwin. 

No sewing skills required. All supplies will be provided. Participants are also invited to bring meaningful fabric scraps or materials they would like to incorporate into their project.

Registration is required. This workshop is designed for adults. Teens and tweens ages 10+ are welcome if participating alongside an adult. Each participant--adult and youth--must be registered individually.

About the Artist

Donelle Wedderburn is a Jamaican-American writer and teaching artist who explores how memory and land shape one another, and how stories can be carried across landscapes, built environments, and collective memory. Inspired by Black women writers such as Toni Morrison and June Jordan, who moved fluidly between narrative and spatial imagination, she sees storytelling as a practice that can shape not only language, but also the spaces we inhabit.
