The film is especially significant for introducing the legendary Paul Robeson to the screen, with Robeson delivering a striking dual performance as an escaped convict posing as a preacher and the preacher’s morally upright brother. Paul Robeson's commanding presence gave the film an extraordinary central performance and marked the beginning of a major screen career. This screening will be followed by a live Cinema Talk exploring the legacy of Oscar Micheaux, Paul Robeson, and the evolution of Black filmmaking.
