Author Tessa Morris-Suzuki from the National University of Australia has recently published a biography of illustrators Maurice and Edward Detmold. It tells the story of twins who exhibited at the Royal Academy in their teens and went on to illustrate some of the most famous books of the early twentieth century, including Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, Aesop’s Fables and The Arabian Nights. 

Their talent disguised complex personalities and both twins committed suicide, nearly 50 years apart. Maurice in 1908 and Edward, who moved to Montgomery during the Second World War with his family and friends, in 1957. 

Tessa’s book is the first book-length biography of the twins and draws on a remarkable collection of previously unpublished photographs in the Old Bell Museum. It also draws on memories of Montgomery residents who remember the Detmold family and their friends, who continued to live in the town until the 1970s. She is re-visiting Montgomery to give the lecture as thanks for the help she received in the town while she was researching her book. 

Doors open at 7pm for 7:30 pm start.
