Hidden in the hills of Powys, Llanfyllin Workhouse (also known as Y Dolydd) is one of the best-preserved workhouses in Wales.
The workhouse was built and completed in 1840 to provide accommodation for the poor in the Llanfyllin Union. It was based on designs by Sampson Kempthorne for the Poor Law Commissioners designed to house 250 paupers with a distinctive layout of four wings extending from a central octagonal Master's House, a common design intended to enable segregation and improve control over the inmates. It was built in response to a sharp increase in poverty during the 1830s and Its primary purpose was to house and provide employment for those unable to support themselves.
Life inside was harsh, with families often separated and inmates forced to wear a uniform during their stay. Inmates could leave the workhouse by giving "reasonable notice," typically three hours. For men with families, this meant the entire family would have to leave with him.
Today, the building survives as a striking reminder of Victorian poverty and resilience. Many rooms remain untouched, and walking through the old dormitories and courtyards gives a real sense of the stories that once played out here.

๐ฏ๏ธ Haunting Tales
With so much history behind its walls, itโs no surprise the Workhouse has gained a reputation for being one of Walesโ most atmospheric and haunted historic sites. Visitors and paranormal groups have reported: Shadowy figures moving in empty corridors, footsteps and whispers in rooms where no one is standing, cold spots in the old infirmary, sounds of children laughing or crying, especially near the former nursery and
Doors opening or closing on their own, with no draft to explain it
Some say the spirits belong to those who lived and died within the Workhouseโincluding former inmates, workers, and the sick who never left.
Will you be brave enough to join us as we investigate this amazing building?
Do you dare to spend the night in the bunkhouse? Please note that places are limited for the sleepover.
