This has contributed to citizen’s cynicism and a decline in institutional trust which puts at risk the social cohesion which has been one of New Zealand’s greatest assets. Most evident is the continued failure to really lift productivity and reach a trajectory like other small, advanced economies.The challenges ahead of us include: a big demographic shift in age and composition and the need for a more complete population strategy, the failure to systematically understand the opportunities in the rapid technology revolution underway in both the digital/AI and life sciences, an inevitable shift in the nature of higher education, a persistent failure of Auckland to demonstrate a comparative agglomeration effect, a failure to maximise international partnerships beyond trade and security, and a continued naive exceptionalism with regard to science and research. At the policy level this is reflected in a relative lack of the use of the tools of long-term thinking including anticipatory foresight and formative evaluation and continued siloed and short-term biases in the budget process.Our guest speaker - Sir Peter Gluckman, founder of Koi Tū: Centre for Informed Futures and the President of International Science Council - will address each of these provocations.About this eventThis will be a hybrid event. Please use this site to register if you plan to attend it in person.If you would like to attend it virtually, please use THIS LINK to register.About the presenterSir Peter Gluckman ONZ KNZM FRSNZ FRS is founder of Koi Tu: Centre for Informed Futures (a non-partisan thinktank focused on long-term and complex issues facing New Zealand), president of the International Science Council and member of the Prime Minister’s Science, Innovation and Technology Advisory Council. Former President of the International Network for Government Science Advice and chief science advisor to the Prime Ministers of New Zealand (2009-2018). He chaired both the recent Science System Advisory Group and the University Advisory Group.He is a biomedical and clinical scientist who has published over 750 scientific papers and was awarded the Rutherford Medal in 2001 and has written extensively on the science policy and science diplomacy interfaces.
