- **Event Description**: Every year in May the New Zealand China Friendship Society holds a National Conference and AGM. Last year National Executive committee members, branch delegates, and members from all over the country gathered together in Christchurch. It was a chance to renew old friendships, exchange stories about the year just gone past, and plan new activities for the year to come. This year the National Conference and AGM was held in Whanganui 22–24 May 2026 with the theme “Our Heroes, Heritage & Horizons.”

Speakers at the conference celebrated the rich history of connection between New Zealand and China, honouring those who helped shape those connections and exploring the new directions ahead for our people-to-people relationships.
The Wellington Branch was well represented, with Wellington Branch President Chris Lipscombe, Central Region Vice President (and Wellington Branch Treasurer) Juping Zhou, Branch Secretary Vera Xu, and Committee Member Paul Sayers all attending the conference and AGM.

At our members’ meeting on Wednesday 17 June, Chris, Juping, Vera and Paul will report back on what happened during the weekend, sharing highlights of the conference, what was presented and discussed, who stepped down (and who stepped up), and key actions and priorities for the organisation over the coming year. A key outcome was the adoption of a five-year plan, including some exciting events and activities to take place here in New Zealand and in China from 2027 onwards to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rewi Alley’s arrival in Shanghai.
