This national ceremony marks New Zealand service in the Korean War. It is held each year on 25 June, the anniversary of the war’s start in 1950, when North Korean forces crossed the 38th Parallel into South Korea.

New Zealand sent a volunteer force called Kayforce, which included an artillery regiment and support units. Around 4,700 New Zealanders served in Korea. Another 1,300 New Zealanders served on six Royal New Zealand Navy frigates operating near the Korean peninsula. 

Between 1950 and 1957, 47 New Zealanders died as a result of their service in Korea. This includes two who died serving with Australian forces.
