Connect to the ancestors and our shared past
E te whānau, nau mai, kuhu mai ki He Tohu!

Bring your whānau, elders, tamariki, grandparents, siblings, aunties and uncles for a special intergenerational experience of the He Tohu exhibition these school holidays.

The tour will begin with whakawhanaungatanga at He Tohu — a permanent exhibition of three iconic constitutional taonga that shape Aotearoa New Zealand.

- 1835 He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni — Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand

- 1840 Te Tiriti o Waitangi — Treaty of Waitangi

- 1893 Women’s Suffrage Petition — Te Petihana Whakamana Pōti Wahine.

These taonga are significant because they shaped who we are as a nation and will shape what we become in the future.

An immersive intergenerational experience
Whānau will be encouraged to share their own stories, knowledge and learning throughout. You’ll experience the mana, wairua and mauri of He Whakapapa Kōrero (the document room) and connect to Aotearoa New Zealand’s original and founding documents.

There will be kēmu (games), waiata (group singing), photo opportunities and small koha (complimentary activity book) for tamariki to take home.

He whakapapa kōrero, he whenua kura | Talking about our past to make a better future.

Designed for tamariki and their whānau
This kaupapa is for ages 4+ and all types of whānau. Pēpi (babies) and nohinohi (toddlers) in prams or arms are also most welcome. There will be space to move about the exhibition as you need, rest or take a pause with your littlest throughout the hour.

Ka mua, ka muri | Walking backwards into the future

Our rangatahi (youth) and tamariki (children) are the future. Our holiday series offers you a whānau experience to explore, learn and be alongside your younger family members.

There will be plenty of chances to share meaningful stories about tūpuna (ancestors), ask and answer questions, and hear what tamariki are most curious about. Their pātai might surprise you!

Who knows? You might even discover you have an ancestor who has signed one of the three documents. Nā reira, nau mai, haere mai.

Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi | When the old net is cast aside, the new net goes fishing

No bookings needed, just turn up on the day!
