BAYBAYIN WORKSHOP

Hosted by Jas Sabrine

Saturday 20 June
3pm - 5pm
at Thistle Hall, 293 Cuba St

Baybayin is one of many pre-colonial scripts used within the Philippine archipelago, primarily in the Tagalog language.

The word ‘baybayin’ derives from ‘baybay’ meaning shore/coast and ‘to spell’ or ‘to write’. It was part of the everyday life of Tagalogs until its near erasure by the Spanish and eventual replacement with the English alphabet.

Today, we are seeing a resurgence in the use of baybayin from artists of differing mediums, to Philippine government documentation.

In this workshop, Jas Sabrine will guide us through a brief history of baybayin; where it comes from, the origin of its shapes, and how it was used.

You will then learn the fundamentals of the alphasyllabary writing system and how to form words using baybayin.

For this workshop, as it is part of the BAKLA exhibition, Jas will be teaching everyone how to write queer Tagalog slang in baybayin.

No experience required.

Tara na mga bakla!
