Katherine Mansfield convincingly evoked the very particular setting of her childhood home, at 75 Tinakori Road, to examine late Victorian class interactions, in her 1922 work of short fiction ‘The Garden Party’. 

Local and NZ History Specialist Gábor Tóth has twitched the historical lace curtain to give us the facts about her Beauchamp family’s neighbours and neighbourhood - who really was just over the palings or the pickets? And what was that terrible stench?

Gábor’s entertaining talk, outlining his detailed investigations into the Tinakori Road area’s residents and their occupations in 1900, will not only give you fascinating insights into demography and social history but possibly a newfound appreciation of your neighbours!
