Join Walk Tours NZ and Wellington City Libraries for 'A Change Is Coming: Journey to Homosexual Law Reform', a powerful one-hour presentation tracing the long and difficult road to reform, presented at Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui Central Library.

Blending live storytelling, historic images, archival audio and personal memories, the presentation begins in 1967 with the first public meeting in New Zealand calling for homosexual law reform, held in what is now City Gallery Wellington. From there, it follows some of the social, political and personal struggles that led to the historic law change of 9 July 1986.

The presentation explores the realities many rainbow people faced before reform, including criminalisation, discrimination, police surveillance, medical stigma, religious condemnation and social exclusion. 

At times confronting, but ultimately uplifting, 'A Change Is Coming' is a celebration of resilience, protest, courage and community. It honours the activists, allies and rainbow communities whose determination helped transform New Zealand society, and whose legacy continues to shape our future.
