✨ DETAILED FULL WALK DESCRIPTION ON OFFER FOR THIS HIKE 🌿
#########################

The trail begins at the Eerste Tol / De Nek parking area next to McBains Lodge. From here, hikers walk about 50 meters to a wooden stile over a wire fence, marking the official start of the path. The route immediately descends into a kloof, leading toward the Witte River, a tributary of the Bobbejaansrivier. Crossing requires careful boulder-hopping, as there is no bridge; choosing a line slightly upstream provides a safer passage. Once across, the trail climbs out of the kloof and onto a contour path high above the Bobbejaansrivier valley.

From this elevated position, the path runs alongside the valley, offering sweeping views of fynbos-covered slopes and rugged cliffs. The terrain alternates between well-worn footpath and rocky sections, making sturdy trail shoes advisable. Roughly 3.5 km from the start, cairns or informal markers indicate a turn-off leading down to the river. This track brings hikers to beautiful rock pools and small waterfalls — a prime swimming spot perfect for a refreshing break. Expect some light scrambling and boulder-hopping to reach water level, and note that the pools remain cold even in summer.

After returning to the main trail, the path continues deeper into the valley with gentle climbs and contours. Another optional side trail leads down to additional pools and falls, less frequented but worth exploring if time allows. The main route gradually narrows and steepens as hikers approach the head of the valley, where the landscape becomes more dramatic and rugged. This section requires careful footing, especially during the final 750 meters, which zigzags up a steep slope on the right side of the gorge.

At the end of this climb lies the three-tiered Bobbejaansrivier waterfall, a striking cascade plunging into sandstone pools. The area offers several highlights: clear swimming pools at the base, opportunities for adventurous scrambles above the falls, and the powerful atmosphere created by rushing water echoing through the ravine. Mist rising from the cascade often catches the sunlight, adding to the scenic beauty. The adventurous final approach — involving a narrow gap, a swim across a deep pool, and a rope-assisted climb — makes reaching the waterfall feel especially rewarding. (PLEASE NOTE -- This section is optional)

The return route retraces the same path back to the parking area, with opportunities to pause again at river pools along the way. In total, the trail covers approximately 10.56 km, combining river crossings, contour paths, swimming spots, and a dramatic waterfall finale.
