Echoes of the Night: The McKaig Bat Study
When: Saturday, May 2, 2026 | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM Severe weather rain date May 3rd.
Join the McKaig Nature Education Center and Dr. Brandi C., Research Scientist from Bat Conservation International, for an immersive evening into the hidden world of Pennsylvania's nocturnal guardians.
📚 The Experience
The Deep Dive: We begin at the historic Old Roberts Schoolhouse for a 45-minute masterclass on our native species, including the Little Brown and Big Brown bats. Discover their role as nature’s pest control and the conservation challenges they face, such as White-Nose Syndrome.
The "Big Rush": At sunset, we’ll take a short walk (0.15 mile) to the McKaig pond. This is prime time for foraging activity. You’ll witness bats skimming the water’s surface and hunting emerging insects.
Sonic Sight: Using specialized ultrasonic equipment, we will translate high-frequency echolocation calls into sounds human ears can hear, letting you "see" the night through their eyes.
