Yet despite its apparently unglamorous nature, Amazonian shamans routinely place the spirit of tobacco at the highest level of the sacred hierarchy, dubbing it "The King of all Plants." Years of eating and breathing tobacco in South America and making medicine from it have led me to believe the wisest men and women in the Amazon are correct. Tobacco opens portals, moves energy through people and space, and acts as a bridge to other plants and spirits. A healer with a strong connection to tobacco can do anything. And the best way to learn from any plant is making plant medicine.I rarely organize events, but for one special weekend at the end of June, I would like to invite you to join me for The Great Tobacco Weekend. Over the course of two and a half days, we will work together to prepare Ambil, the sacred tobacco medicine which grants the curanderos of the Amazon their power. The techniques that I will show you for preparing this sacred medicine have remained unchanged for generations, from the unbundling of the tobacco, to the concentration of the liquid, down to the final blessings before it is preserved. As the woodfire burns, there will be additional activities to better align ourselves with the energy of this incredible plant. Outside of organized activities, the property offers many ways to rest and connect with nature. Best of all, you will take home medicine that you prepared so that you can continue your practice with what you've learned. The weekend's workshops and activities take place on an idyllic 14-acre property in Catskill Park.The SettingThe main house, where all meals will be provided, is a well-equipped country cabin. Additional sleeping accommodations are located in a second cabin nearby. Participants have the option to sleep in the cozy cabin bedrooms and then walk down the road a few minutes at the start of each day to the main property where all the activities will take place. Alternatively, you can glamp (outbuilding) or camp (tent) on the land itself. Wake up early with the birdsong and take a walk around the pond and meet the other woodland creatures.This is my family's property so you might meet my parents and my partner. This is by design. Come as a guest and leave as a member of our family. This is not a retreat in the modern sense. There is no branding, no itinerary optimized for Instagram, no carefully managed arc of transformation. What there is: a fire, a purpose, good food, open land, and people willing to show up for something real. Come with flexible expectations. No matter how well we plan, sometimes the universe has other ideas and learning to move with that, rather than against it, is part of what we're here to practice.ItineraryFriday, June 26th (Evening)Arrive in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, about a 25-minute drive from Ellenville, New York. We will enjoy a nice meal, watch the sunset, make an offering to mother earth to open up the weekend, and begin the cooking process with the unbundling of the tobacco and the preparation of the fire. Participants will learn the fundamentals of preparing all sacred medicines as well as the protocols related to Ambil preparation. You will be given a small amount of practice Ambil for the weekend and be encouraged to consume it during the entire weekend's activities. Because there is much work to be done, the medicine will be cooked continuously through the night. Individuals can volunteer to stay awake or go to sleep depending on their needs.Saturday, June 27thAfter a fairly frontloaded Friday, participants get to relax more on Saturday. By now everyone will have an idea of how the first phase of medicine preparation works. Everyone will rotate and cook the medicine in shifts so that we all have a chance to spend one-on-one time meditating with the medicine as it boils. You will be able to hone your blessing skills during this period as well. Those who are not cooking can enjoy the surrounding nature — swimming in the pond or sitting amongst the trees. Each of you will also get one-on-one time with me where I will perform a tobacco cleansing so that everyone knows what the process feels like from the patient's perspective. As a bonus I will introduce the group to the famous Amazonian tradition of the Alum stone. By the afternoon we should be able to transition into the finishing phase of the medicine. In the evening we will pause and enjoy a wonderful BBQ dinner that is sure to please everyone.Sunday, June 28thBy late morning, the preparation of the final medicine will be complete. Everyone will finally get to try the Ambil that they helped prepare and take some home! We will close out with a sharing circle and a final offering, and you can go home with the satisfaction of knowing that your participation has contributed to the preservation of a great tradition that is slowly being lost to time.PricingApart from the costs associated with housing, food, raw tobacco, and 2 days' worth of firewood and charcoal, a meaningful portion of your contribution will go to my Maestro and his mother and grandmother in Yarinococha, Peru. There is a hard cap of 10 participants. I will try to help you sort out your transportation.
