Creative interpretation of our theme is always welcomed and encouraged! This event is free, while in-person donations are always appreciated. The Grand National Lounge would appreciate your patronage too! They have a wide variety of beverages both non-alcohol and full octane. Seating will be creative and LIMITED to the first 25 people with plenty of standing room. There will be additional seating in the bar area if you don't mind listening to the stories from "afar." Waupaca Story Project is an organization that promotes community through the art of sharing our true stories. Notes for our audience members: - This is a listening event, which means all other talking should be in a whisper to honor the storytellers. -There will be adult content and stories may not be appropriate for kids. - Waupaca Story Project welcomes people with a wide range of beliefs, experiences and stories to tell. Please be respectful of all storytellers and attendees. With that being said, no story will be allowed to continue if it is hateful or overly crude. A story summary (at least 4–5 sentences) This should clearly outline the narrative arc—how the story begins, what happens, and how it ends. An emotional description of the story (if you have one) Examples: “A tender, bittersweet story about a missed connection,” or “A heavy, gut-punch story about losing my home.” A short bio about yourself. (no more than 3 lines) You may eventually be asked for more, but this is a good place to start. Story Submission Guidelines For the Waupaca Story Project stage, a story needs to meet the following criteria: It matches the theme. Stories should be linked to the theme which can and SHOULD be creatively interpreted. It must be true. Real life only, please. The messy, awkward, unfinished kind is especially welcome. It must be about you. YOU are the central character. The events happened to you, and we experience them through your perspective. It must be under 7 minutes. We’ll keep time and give you a signal at 6 minutes to indicate when it’s time to land the ending. This is not to rush you, but rather a way to support you in a successful ending. This usually works out to be about 1.5 – 2 pages, single-spaced if it helps you to type it out for practice. Please read/tell your story aloud and time yourself before submitting so you know it is within our timeframe. It needs to be a real story. Something should happen. One clear experience. A beginning, a middle where things shift, and an ending that lands. We’re not looking for reflections on a theme or a highlight reel of moments. The power is in the specifics: take us into a particular time and place. It doesn’t HAVE to be funny. Your story does not need to be funny (though it can be). Quiet, strange, tender, or heavy are all welcome too. Just make sure it’s storytelling—not a stand-up routine, essay, or monologue.
