Have you ever wanted to publish your own book of writing or art? Zines (pronounced zeen) are the perfect way to get started with DIY publishing! In this class, participants will learn a brief history of self-publishing from fanzines to punk-rock zines to artistic publishing and learn skills in design, printing, and binding. By the end of the class, each person will have 20 small booklets with their own content.
All materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring text or images to use in their zines. Free and open to all ages and experiences. Under 12 should be accompanied by an adult.
Classes will be taught by Adam Bryant and Laura Rowley, both teaching book artists from the Finger Lakes Region. Adam earned his MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book in 2021. At UICB, his areas of study were bookbinding, book history, letterpress printing and papermaking.
Since 2022, he has worked as a Senior Conservation Technician in the Cornell University Library Conservation Lab. Laura earned her MFA from the University of Alabama in 2014. She operates Illuminated Press which publishes small editions of handmade books, and she is the Director of the Lodi Whittier Library.
