About the event

Writing in Nature
Writer and Conservationist Laurence Rose returns for another of his popular Writing in Nature Workshops. This workshop will take you outdoors and into the inspiring surroundings of RSPB Old Moor Nature Reserve. You will practice observing and connecting to the natural world, and explore the autumn through all your senses while you find new ways to express your creativity.

This Workshop is for anyone who wants find new ways to observe, connect and create with nature. Everyone’s welcome, regardless of experience. Whether you’re interested in poetry or non-fiction, journaling or story-telling, or just want to find a new way to enjoy the outdoors, you will find inspiration and something new to bring to your to your writing.

The day will include walks and activities to help you find inspiration in the beautiful setting of RSPB Old Moor nature reserve, as well as time to write, share and discuss both indoors and outdoors.

Morning

Meet in the Courtyard at 10.30am

Introduction

Walks in the nature reserve and break-out activities

Lunch – bring your own or treat yourself in our Café

Time for one-to-one chats and sharing writing samples

Afternoon

Into the Visitor Centre for writing and conversation, followed by more outdoor exercises.

Laurence Rose is the acclaimed writer of The Long Spring (2018), Framing Nature (2020) and Leopard Moon Rising (2021) with his next book Windhover out next year. Retired after nearly 40 years with the RSPB, he is now a full-time writer, with much of his time spent researching and writing the stories behind the RSPB’s species recovery work. He regularly collaborates with artists, musicians and composers in joint nature-inspired projects and is himself a ‘resting’ composer. Find out more about Laurence at laurencerose.co.uk.

Parking is free at Old Moor.

RSPB Old Moor is South Yorkshire’s best kept secret: a place to spot some wonderful nature, explore and discover with the kids or just walk around in peace and quiet. There’s lots to do as a family with our new sensory garden, our playground, wild play areas and pond dipping (Easter to October). Or, discover a hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy nature and take a breather; you could even try our Natural Wellbeing trail.

Stop off at the café for hot food, cake and enjoy a hot drink with a view on our balcony with stunning views across the reserve. Our shop sells a fantastic range of gifts for all ages, wrapping paper and cards and wildlife care products so you can create a nature haven in your own outdoor space and join us in giving nature a home. Car parking is free.

Accessibility: Old Moor is on the Trans-Pennine Trail so is very accessible locally via foot or bike. Our paths are wheelchair and pushchair friendly and we have mobility scooters available to pre-book for your visit. We have accessible toilets and baby changing facilities.
